If you are moving or selling your home, summer is a great time to host a garage sale! No need to pack the numerous item you don’t need and a great way to sell your home is to move out your clutter! Below are some tips for having a successful garage sale in Colorado!

1. Clean-Out

Seems like common sense, but this is the most important first step in planning for your successful garage sale. Don’t let it be overwhelming. If you have the time, span it over a few weeks and take one level or a group of rooms at a time! Organize items into Keep, Sell, Trash! I love the feeling of cleaning out my house and getting rid of clutter! This is great first step for spring cleaning as well!

2. Organize

For this next step in having a successful garage sale, grab a few large tubs. You can sort by price or by category. I prefer to sort by category. I also think people are more likely to stay longer at your garage sale if it is organized by certain categories (books, children clothing, kitchen, bath, games, etc).

3. Pricing and Display

Please think about pricing your items. It can be easy to just leave them without a price and have people inquire. This is an introverts nightmare and may cause customers to leave your garage sale upon arrival. Or put down items and walk away if you are busy helping other customers. You can buy pre-printed garage sale pricing stickers here for cheap.

You can also display items on a table by price (50cent Table, $1 Table, etc). Early in the season stop by a few garage sales on your way home to get an idea of pricing at garage sales in your area. Pricing and display are key component to having a successful garage sale.

Setting up a cute few displays will do wonders for your success! Setting up clothing in a cute outfit display in front of your rack will stop those mini vans in their tracks! Setting up those old dishes in a cute table top display will surely sell them quick! Rather then just throwing them on a table, if you can display them cute, people will by them!

There are some cute ideas for lemonade stands out there too. A few that we love are from our sister site, www.rootedwonderland.com.

4. Advertising

Today advertising can take many different forms. You can sell some of your larger items first through Craigslist, Ebay, or Facebook groups. For advertising the actual day of the sale you want to make sure you cover a couple key factors.

1. Advertising on Craigslist and area Facebook groups. Many neighborhoods have separate Facebook groups as well to advertise!

2. Advertise as a multi-family sale or neighborhood sale! People love to get more bang for their buck! If they know they can drive to one area of town and hit many different sales at once they are more likely to visit!

3. Accept credit cards. This day and age it can be easy. Get a square reader for cheap and I guarantee you will make more sales because you accept credit cards. It is worth it. They will charge about 3% processing charge, but you can also tell you customers that you will charge a $1 or two extra and most are okay with it if they are buying a lot and getting a good deal!

4. Have signs that are eye catching and bright. A cute idea is to advertise kids grab bags for 50cents. Many moms have their kids in tow and a .50cent grab bag will lure them in! If the kids are happy, mom is happy, and can shop!!! Equally a successful garage sale!

If you follow the steps above we know you will have a successful garage sale! Cheers to a successful garage sale, good weather, and long summer days! If you live in Colorado Springs make sure to join our 2019 Summer Community Garage Sale Event! Make sure you have a successful Garage Sale!
