If you are thinking of moving to Colorado, you may have found yourself asking the question: What’s different between Denver and Colorado Springs? How do I know which will suit my lifestyle?
In this blog, we break down how living in Denver or Colorado Springs would work for you and the major differences which will hopefully help you choose Denver or Colorado Springs over the other.
Denver vs Colorado Springs: Which one is better?
One of the most obvious differences is the mountains. You are in such close proximity to the foothills when you are in Colorado Springs. If you ever visit Denver and wonder how you can get closer to the mountains, all you need to do is to keep driving till you reach Colorado Springs. Along with the mountains, the Colorado Springs has lots of blue skies, green shrubbery, and red dirt as its part of the terrain here. So, if getting some spectacular views are on your list, Colorado Springs is your answer.
The density of people is much higher in Denver than in Colorado Springs which means with respect to the kind of events that take place in these cities, Denver has bigger events like avalanche playoff games, while Colorado Springs hosts smaller sporting events teams. What we mean to say is that if you enjoy the city life or the night life or prefer a younger crowd, Denver has more to offer. However, Colorado Springs is definitely up and coming in terms of restaurants and nightlife. One of our good friends, Megan Thomas runs ‘Single in the Spring’ in Colorado Springs, and she also blogs about all the different restaurants and nightlife that Colorado Springs has to offer. Colorado Springs also pulls more military as compared to Denver, who on the other hand hosts more techies and a lot of engineering firms in terms of job opportunities.
Talking costs, you can absolutely get more house per buck in Colorado Springs than in Denver. What costs you $600,000 in northern Colorado Springs will cost you $800,000 in northern or southern Denver.
One of our clients from Chicago initially wanted to see houses in Denver, and after we showed them homes all the way from south Denver to Castle Rock, we could tell nothing was working for them. So, we showed them the north end of Colorado Springs in Black Forest which they instantly loved and said that they were willing to make the commute. While in theory, the commute from north Colorado Springs until south Denver is 45 minutes, considering traffic and other things, there could be quite a delay.
Another great difference between Denver and Colorado Springs is that Denver has suburbs. Comparatively, Colorado Springs has different areas of town. Denver has Aurora, Centennial and Highlands Ranch whereas the Springs has Management Springs, Monument but I would say we’re not as large as Denver.
Another big factor when you consider moving, is the employment opportunities that the place comes with. Since Denver is bigger, they have more opportunity as far as jobs are concerned. Although with the Covid scene, we’re finding a lot of employers willing to let employees work from home for at least a few days a week and so people are moving to improve their lifestyle.
Circling back to the lifestyle, Denver is a big city with big roads. But that’s not to say that Colorado Springs is not growing. If you are a big city person, and don’t like living in a small town, Colorado Springs could be your best bet. If you are a small towner looking for a change of pace, Colorado Springs could be right for you too as it’s not as busy as Denver but will also ease you into the city life. Colorado Springs also offers many conveniences for families like Target, Sprouts, and trendy restaurants. There are always new places that pop up here and you’ll be spoiled for choice.
On another note, the proximity to the airport is one of the other differences. You can fly anywhere you want without any connecting flights by either flying directly from Denver or fly from Colorado Springs to Denver for that connecting flight. Although, it is worth noting that Colorado Springs is getting more and more airlines coming to our airport and I have to say our airport is so easy to take and it’s very inexpensive. However, you got to plan like $150 for driving up there and additional for tolls and parking.
We recently booked a trip through Denver because we didn’t want a layover in Denver, and it was cheaper to do that trip too. However, we do think that we’re getting more and more direct flights in Colorado Springs where you don’t stop in Denver first or Dallas first. The airport is big enough that you can do so and it’s really convenient too.
