In Colorado, the “School of Choice” policy allows parents and students to choose which public schools within the district—or even outside their home district—they wish to attend. This option is based on space availability and is not restricted by geographical boundaries.

Here’s how it generally works:

1. Application Process: Parents can apply to schools they’re interested in, whether these are within their home district or in a different district. Most schools require applications to be submitted during a specific enrollment period, often early in the year.
2. Lottery System: If a school receives more applications than it has spots available, a lottery system is typically used to determine which students will be admitted. This process is designed to be fair and impartial.
3. Enrollment Preferences: Some schools may give priority to students based on factors like having a sibling already enrolled in the school, proximity to the school, or whether the student lives within the district. If your student has a 504 or IEP please contact the Districts Central Registry Directly. 
4. Transportation: One important consideration is that transportation may not always be provided for students attending a school outside their local attendance area. Parents may need to arrange transportation.
